Username and Display Name Policy

Usernames and Display Names are a core part of identity on Cantina. They help users recognize, connect with, and build community with one another.

Because usernames and Display Names are public and highly visible, they must comply with Cantina’s Community Guidelines. Names that create harm, confusion, deception, or legal risk are not permitted.

Selecting a username
Usernames are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and they cannot be reserved or held on inactive accounts. They are permanent and cannot be changed once selected. 

Display names can be changed, but they are also subject to this policy. 

Users are responsible for choosing a username and Display Names that comply with this policy.

What violates this policy? 

The following types of usernames and Display names are not allowed:

Deceptive or abusive conduct

• Impersonating individuals, organizations, public figures or Cantina personnel without authorization
• Using a name that falsely implies you are employed by, officially represent, or are endorsed by Cantina or another organization
• Misleading others into believing an affiliation or endorsement that does not exist
• Username squatting (registering usernames for resale or to prevent legitimate use)
• Buying, selling, or soliciting payment or favors in exchange for usernames

Examples of prohibited names: 

• @cantina_support
• @cantinaadmin
• @johnatcantina
• @elonmuskofficial

Examples that are generally allowed:

• @cantinafan
• @cantinacreator
• @swiftie4life

Harassment & hate

• Usernames that target, harass, or intimidate others
• Slurs or derogatory language directed at protected groups
• References that promote hatred, discrimination, or violence

Sexual & exploitative  content

• References to sexual acts, genitalia, sexual fluids, or explicit sexual content
• Sexualization of minors in any form
• References to sexual exploitation or coercion

Violence & self-harm

• Threats of violence or harm
• References that promote or glorify self-harm or suicide

Illegal or harmful activity

• References to child exploitation, terrorism, or other criminal activity
• Usernames that infringe intellectual property rights
• Usernames that expose another person’s private information (e.g., full legal name, location, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other sensitive data without consent)

This policy applies to usernames and Display Names for both user accounts and bot accounts.

Enforcement

We reserve the right to determine whether a username or Display Name violates this policy based on context, intent, and impact. If a username or Display Name violates this policy, Cantina may:

• Require the username or Display Name to be changed, including resetting them if necessary
• Restrict account features
• Suspend or permanently disable the account
   

Reporting a username or Display Name

If you encounter a username or Display Name that you believe violate this policy, you can report it by following these instructions. Our Trust & Safety team will review and take appropriate action.
